About Us

For many years following World War II the high cost of original prints made them inaccessible to all but the wealthiest private collectors. By the early 1960s, a growing awareness of fine art among the general public inspired a new generation of artists to develop more practical production techniques and to retain agents and publishers to distribute and sell their work to galleries.

In 1972, I graduated from Ohio State University with a degree in fine arts and interior design. Shortly thereafter we opened Contemporary Graphics Gallery in Cleveland's historic Shaker Square. From its start Contemporary Graphics offered prints by renowned American and international artists. Our timing was just right. Before the close of the decade, Contemporary Graphics played host to the first major exhibitions of Nicola Simbari and Victor Vasarely in the Cleveland area. It was also during this time that I introduced the pioneering works of Hungarian artist Laszlo Dus to the American public.

A decade later Contemporary Graphics had become one of the most successful art galleries in the Midwest. Throughout the 1980s, I enjoyed the privilege of exhibiting works by Max Ernst, Miro, and Henry Moore in conjunction with some of the most respected agents and publishers in the art world. Pages on this website highlight my very special long-term relationships with Laszlo Dus and Leon Gordon Miller.

By 1990 Contemporary Graphics Inc., now doing business as Joe Gross Gallery, boasted a clientele of national proportions. In 1998 ,I held the first major exhibition in Cleveland of turn-of-the century European posters in conjunction with Jacques-Paul Athias and the Club of American Collectors of Fine Art. The little gallery on Shaker Square I had started fresh out of college had grown beyond my wildest dreams, but my goals were still the same: to sell the finest art available.

Through Joe Gross Gallery Online my collection is available through the internet to showcase hundreds of original prints, by artists representing a wide range of contemporary schools: from abstract expressionist and pop art to decorative. On these pages, you will find the works of Agam, Appel, Calder, Dali, Indiana, Miro, Nagel, Papart, Rockwell and Vasarely to name just a few.
