R2 the R2R - California Ride

Prepared by Max Heeres, member The Lost Tribe of Arizona

It is with great joy that I announce that the R2 the R2R is back on! I had a motorcycle accident in early June when I got hit by a flying boat while riding in the desert, wiped out and broke my ankle. Almost as cool as Steve's bear! Dr. Doug saved the day by stepping up to lead the ride. Doug is a highly proficient road captain and one of our best riders.

We are proud to announce our costal ride to the R2R in San Diego, the R2R2R 2022

Due to hot desert temperatures in September this ride will all take place in California, up and down the coast and then around the LA area, via scenic routes, to San Diego.

We will meet up Sunday night (9/4/22) in Solvang, well north of LA, allowing everybody to fly in and pick up their rental bikes over the weekend and get out of the traffic.

Options for rentals:

  • Rent in LA and return after R2R on Sunday (San Diego and LA are only 100 miles apart - 3 hours with traffic)

  • Rent in San Diego, making your Sunday return easier

  • Rent in the San Francisco area, meet us in Monterey Monday night, return bike in San Diego (there's a one way fee involved but might be worth it)

Here are some notes regarding the hotels:

  • Solvang (Pea Soup Andersen's) would only block 20 rooms, so I need the first 10 people to book outside of the block, while prices are still low. In any case I would also check the regular price to see if it is better. For all hotels. The hotel is 3 miles out of town and will have a shuttle to go into town for dinner. Solvang is a Danish town and therefore a cool tourist trap. It'll be my first visit.

  • Monterey was a nightmare to find rooms. No blocks and no hotels large enough for 30 rooms (and a reasonable price). So we're targeting a few hotels on the same street. Get what you can and get it fast. We will be walking together (or Ubering?) to Fishermen's Wharf for dinner, a 20-30 minute walk.

We have to cap this ride at 30 for logistical reasons.

Dr. Doug Faigel will be leading the ride.

Doug Faigel can be reached via link to his e-mail or (503) 718-8062

Max Heeres will be helping from behind the scenes too, so please copy Max via this link to his e-mail on your communications

Let's ride!
